Monivea
stormed to a fantastic Junior Cup win in the
Sportsground on a score line of Monivea 14 -
6 Corinthians. The much hyped Corinthians;
current junior league champions were
dominated by the village club. Corinthians
scores came from 1 penalty & 1 drop goal
both scored by David Clarke but neither could swing the game in their favour.
Monivea had the majority of the possession
in the 1st half but failed to convert it
into points. The second half sprung to life
with a blistering run up the wing & a
try under the posts from Rory O'Connor. Ger
O'Connor converted the kick & later
scored & converted his own try after an
inside pass from Darren Blade inside the
Corinthians 22. The Monivea pack had a great
game & this provided the platform for
the backs to work there Magic! The introduction of Pat
"The Master" Blade in the last few
minutes crowned off a great day for the
players & everyone involved with
Monivea. Next up is game two in the AIL
round robin Vs Derry (Away) (11/04/09)

Monivea's
season so far
Can
you imagine if Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo,
Ferdinand, Neville, Evra and Carrick were
to up sticks and leave league champions
Manchester United during the off
season....would United bounce back and be
in contention again the following season?
Well now consider the tremendous loss seven
first team players have on a Junior Club in
rural Galway. To arrive where Monivea are
today is such a huge achievement it is hard
to know where to start. As well as losing
the players, this year also saw
a new management and coaching team
put in place and from day one the objective
was to qualify for this year’s Qualifiers
. There were rumblings throughout the
province that the good days were gone for
Monivea Rugby and the new players
couldn’t fill the boots of the departing
immigrants. But there was a quiet
confidence within the panel and in a
competitive league as has been seen for
years this young team stood up to the mark
and have done themselves and Monivea Rugby
proud. When you consider that the average
age of this year’s squad is 24, the
future looks good for this crop in a long
line of fine sides to grace the field at
the Castle Grounds. With
10 wins, 1 draw and an away loss to
Castlebar, Monivea finished second in the
League behind Corinthians so qualifying for
this year’s Round robin as Corinthians
have a team in the All Ireland League.
As well as a fine league campaign,
This year’s side has also progressed to
the Junior Cup final having beaten
Buccaneers, Gort, Westport and
Galwegians......all away from home. Next
Saturday see’s the visit of Cashel to the
Castle Grounds in Monivea at 2.30pm for the
first of the All Ireland Qualifiers.
Support would be appreciated.
And
after the excitement of the home qualifier,
the village of Monivea is gearing itself
for a Junior Cup Final on Sunday week
against league winners Corinthians. So, we
would encourage everyone
to come out
and support this home grown bunch
who have done their family’s and club
proud against all the odds.
