01/010/11 Mona V Westport
Monivea 22
Westport 10
Last weekends break in junior League 1 action for Monivea wont sit well on the shoulders of the home sides management team as Monivea struggled to come to terms with the pace and ferocity of the visitors challenge. After 3 bonus point wins from 3, it seemed last years runners up were building momentum with each game but the the weekend off had the reverse effect on Monivea. The final score was not a true reflection of the game and Westport left the Castle grounds knowing this was a game they could have taken more from. In fairness the home side started the brighter and 3 unanswered tries from Ger O Connor, Ronan Coughlan and debutant Colman Maher off which O'Connor converted 2 left the half time score at 22-0.
But if ever there was a game of two halves the large crowd gathered in humid conditions on Sunday bore testament to this age old saying.
Westport owned the ball for the second half with numerous handling errors, penalties conceded and general sloppy play from Monivea allowed the visitors take control of the half. Excellent kicking from hand from outhalf Lyndon Jones meant Monivea were left desperately trying to run the ball from their own 22 trying to secure that illusive fourth try and bonus point. It never materialised and the visitors scored twice with Lyndon Jones and the strong running Kevin Corcoran crossing the line. The failed conversions left the final score 22-10 to Monivea but a lot of work needed if League Title ambitions are to be achieved. The only real positives to come from Sundays performance was the introduction of two more underage players, Colman Maher and Eoin Blade into the starting line up, another fine example of the emerging talent coming through the ranks of the village club.
