Monivea 13
Monivea came away from the Sportground with a hard earned but much deserved victory over 2nd placed Our Ladys Boys Club in terrible conditions on Sunday. The home side won the toss but elected to play against a strong breeze in the first half, and because of this most of the first half was played in the home sides half. In fact Boys Club only ventured into Monivea's 22 on one occasion in a half that only yielded 2 Ger O'Connor penalties. Going in at the break, Boys Club must have felt the happier with the ever increasing wind at their backs in the second half.
But if anyone ever doubted the resolve, character and sheer determination that has stood to this particular bunch of players over the last four years, it came out in abundance on Sunday afternoon. They carried the fight to the home side. Forward after forward picked and drove with stamina sapping aggression that had been lacking in recent weeks, with Willie Parker and Eoin Rooney to the fore. In another man of the match performance it was Rooney who got the only try of the game 15 minutes after the restart that left the home side reeling. A delightful conversion form the touch line from O'Connor left it at 13 - 0. Boys Club only answer to the ferocity Moniveas defense was to play for territory, with former Monivea player Dave Prior kicking with the wind at every opportunity. But Moniveas back 3 of Colman Maher, Seamie Fahy and Brian Flaherty were not found wanting in this department and countered time and time again to frustrate the home side who's only score came from the boot of Greg Faherty.
James Walsh, Liam Curran and Rob Lennon carried the fight for the home side but it was to be Moniveas day with excellent performances from Eoin Rooney, Willie Parker, Kieran Concar and Kevin Higgins on a day when Brian Flaherty became the 6th under 21 player to debut for Monivea after only 5 league games this year so far.
